Art & Activism
In this lesson, we eamine the role of Art activism in social justice and how it has played an important role during major movements that advocate for social and political changes. Art Activism is a dynamic practice combining the creative power of the arts to move us emotionally with the strategic planning of activism necessary to bring about social change. Students will be familiarized with the role of the artist as an activist by looking at different artwork. The main movements that this lesson will focus on are The Civil Rights movement where students will see the different manifestations of art activism through song, poem, and visual arts, the Dakota Pipeline where students will watch a video and learn about an art project, and lastly about the Black lives Matter movement by looking at different visual art that portrays the artist vision about what does Black Lives Matter means.
