Resource Overview
Land Justice
In this lesson, we will expand on students' understanding of environmental justice by comparing Indigenous perspectives of land and the environment to that of settler colonial views. Students will consider how the doctrine of discovery and 'dominion over nature' informs settlers' ideas about the environment, and will reflect on the ways it differs from traditional views of land. Using critical reflection, students will understand the ways that certain dominant belief systems of land and the environment have perpetrated violence against Indigenous people and the earth. They will conclude by learning about the #landback movement and consider what land justice means in relation to the broader environmental justice movement.
